I present to you my directorial debut: Siyabonga.
My recent movie exposes the conflicts between two groups of people: farmers and pastoral farmers. This is an issue which is close to home for me coming from a rural town in Tanzania. Prior to embarking on the project I undertook extensive research into the subject maintaining that I could present a realistic account of the problem. The film echoes the day to day life of villagers who live and depend on the land as a means of getting by. Can the two ever really live harmoniously? How will Siyabonga balance rebuilding the farm and keeping his family together? It is a tale which puts the protagonist through more than any man should ever have to endure: love, loss and betrayal.
This is a harrowing tale of misplaced trust between boyfriend and girlfriend.
It explores the themes of unrequited from the female role and her feelings towards her partner and mother-in-law. Even though some love stories do not always have a happy ending, this one explores the turbulence that is always there at some level in every relationship. It bring home that if the circumstances are wrong, true love can be difficult to surface.
This is a story of two star-crossed lovers from Dar Es Salaam. James and Patricia only share one thing in common: their love for one another.
James is a small town boy with very little prospects and Patricia is a well respected Doctor. The story see's the progression of their relationship into co-habitation and later parenting a child together, to the downhill journey which leaves James feeling inferior in Patricia's family home. He can only take so many knocks from his in-laws, when he finally decides to leave and starts on the journey to find himself. Will James ever live up to the expectation that is put upon him as a father?
Safari Ya Gwalu is the award winning film which portrays a quirky spin on an issue faced by the main character Gwalu, who has little to no formal education to begin with.
As an adult with no prospects or means to support himself, Gwalu delved into the unknown and decided to return to school. Most adults turning to education would find themselves in night school of an evening, but not Gwalu. Gwalu enrolled himself into a busy urban primary school in which the children faced many trials and tribulations. Little did he know, as well as gaining an education, Gwalu gave the children the gift of experience as he talked them through the problems that can be faced growing up in a thriving city. Will Gwalu ever learn how to fulfill his dream? Will he help the children to reach their full potential?
